Life of Indian Students in Kyrgyzstan – ISM Edutech MP Student Stories

ISM Edutech MP Counseling Team December 8, 2025 6 min read

Kyrgyzstan is home to over 10,000 Indian medical students, many of them from Madhya Pradesh. Here's an honest look at what student life is really like — based on real stories from ISM Edutech MP students currently studying in Bishkek.

The City: Bishkek

Bishkek is a modern, clean, and safe city of about 1 million people. It has wide tree-lined streets, parks, and mountains visible on the horizon. It's very walkable and the public transport system (buses and minibuses called "marshrutkas") is affordable and reliable. Taxis via the Yandex app cost ₹60–150 for most rides within the city.

Accommodation

Most Indian students live in university hostels initially and later move to private apartments. University hostels cost ₹3,000–6,000/month. Private apartments shared between 2–3 students cost ₹4,000–8,000/month per person. Apartments are comfortable with modern amenities.

Food

Indian food is easily available in Bishkek. There are Indian restaurants and grocery stores selling Indian spices, dal, rice, atta, and masalas. Many students cook their own food in private apartments. A full meal at an Indian restaurant costs ₹150–300. Local Kyrgyz food (plov, lagman, samsa) is also delicious and very affordable.

Student Community

There is a very strong Indian student community in Bishkek. The Indian Students Association (ISA) organises cultural events, Holi and Diwali celebrations, cricket tournaments, and study groups. Many students say the community helped them feel at home within the first few weeks.

"I was nervous about leaving Indore for the first time. But within a week in Bishkek, I felt at home. The Indian community here is amazing — we cook together, study together, and celebrate every festival." — Priya S., 2nd Year MBBS, KSMU

Academic Life

Classes at KSMU and IHSM start at 8 AM and typically run till 2–3 PM. The curriculum follows a structured approach with theoretical and practical components. Anatomy labs, physiology practicals, and clinical rotations are part of the programme from year 1. Professors are approachable and many speak English well.

"The professors at KSMU are very helpful. If you put in the effort, the exams are manageable. I topped my batch in first year and I'm from Bhopal — no special preparation needed, just consistency." — Rahul M., 3rd Year MBBS, KSMU

Safety

Kyrgyzstan is one of the safest countries in Central Asia for international students. The local population is warm and welcoming to Indians. Students can walk around Bishkek safely even at night in most areas. There is a 24/7 helpline for Indian students run by the Indian Embassy in Bishkek.

Internet & Connectivity

4G internet is fast and cheap. A monthly data plan costs ₹300–500 and provides 50+ GB of data. Students stay connected with family back home easily via WhatsApp and video calls.

Weather

Bishkek has four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are warm and pleasant (25–35°C). Winters (December–February) can be cold (–5 to –15°C). Students from MP take 2–3 weeks to adjust to the winter cold but find it manageable with proper clothing.

What to Pack

  • Warm woollen clothes and a good winter jacket
  • Indian spices and home essentials for the first few months
  • Your original documents in a waterproof folder
  • A universal adapter and a power bank
  • Medicines for common ailments (as per your needs)
